Rembrandt, actually Harmensz van Rijn, decided to become a painter following a brief spell at Leiden University. He has left a legacy of around 700 paintings, 300 etchings and 1,600 drawings on wood. The outstanding feature of his work is a highly developed technical skill and very sensitive powers of observation.
